Elite hockey athlete refuses to be silenced by ALS diagnosis and launches My Turn, a nationwide campaign and film to create awareness, raise funds and support people living with the debilitating disease.
Kalamazoo, MI – October 25, 2018
Every 90 minutes someone is diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a rapidly progressive, invariably fatal neurological disease that attacks the nerves (neurons) responsible for controlling voluntary muscles. The terminal disease progressively steals a person’s ability to run, walk, speak, smile, laugh, and even breathe. However, former professional hockey player, Scott Matzka is committed to making sure his voice is heard with the release of his harrowing documentary, My Turn, chronicling his journey with ALS.
Scott’s Journey with ALS
From Port Huron, Michigan, to an NCAA national championship at the University of Michigan to a highly successful 11-year professional career in North American and European leagues – Scott's entire life has been a continuing ice hockey success story. Yet, despite excelling as a highly-decorated player, coach, and mentor, he was not immune to contracting ALS. He received the life-changing news in September 2015, after undergoing extensive neurological testing. Over the past 3 years, Scott has made it his life’s mission to bring awareness to the disease while also living his life to the fullest with his wife of 11 years, Catie and their two young children.
“There is no plan except living your life. Our life has settled into a new ‘normal’, but we are committed to making the most of every day. I won’t let ALS steal my story" Scott explains in a recent TEDx Talk.
To continue his mission of speaking out about his disease, Scott recently teamed up with innovative storytellers, Rhino, a visual media company out of Kalamazoo, MI to capture his story and share it with the world. From his daily struggles to complete simple tasks that many people take for granted, to being dependent on his wife to dress him, Scott’s story is a testament to the courage that people with ALS have and their conviction to raise awareness.
The prognosis for a person with ALS is grim and annual estimated costs for care is approximately $250,000.
“The unfortunate truth is, most of us go through life never knowing our purpose. And, although I am in a battle for life, ALS has revealed to me my purpose. Simply put, it is my turn to speak up. My turn to speak out and stand out, and to do as much as I can to help my family and to help build awareness and understanding of ALS," Scott explains in the new documentary, capturing his ALS journey, My Turn, The Film
To raise funds to help his family and generate nationwide awareness of ALS, the moving documentary, My Turn, can be purchased on-demand for $9.99 on Vimeo.com. Half of all proceeds will be used to support the daily needs of the Matzka Family that inevitably arise with an ALS diagnosis and Scott is also contributing 15% of each sale towards the Susan Mast ALS Foundation, and ALS TDI, a research group in Boston.
